LIFEGUARD (PERMANENT INTERMITTENT) – SANTA CRUZ DISTRICT / HALF MOON BAY STATE PARK

The reporting location for this position is the Half Moon Bay Park Operations Office at Half Moon Bay State Beach in the City of Half Moon Bay. This position will work under the direction of the Northern San Mateo Coast Supervising State Park Peace Officer. Areas of responsibility include Thornton SB, Gray Whale Cove SB, Montara SB, HMBSB, Burleigh Murray SP, San Gregorio SB, Pomponio SB, Pescadero SB, Bean Hollow SB, Butano SP, Pigeon Point SHP, Ano Nuevo SP, and the Waddell and RDO subunits of Big Basin SP, however this position may provide coverage district wide as operational need arises. Duties include patrol and response to a variety of public safety calls for service including aquatic rescues, medical emergencies, search and rescues. Incumbent will also work extensively with allied public safety agencies on interagency details throughout the county.   A valid departmental Emergency Medical Technican license is desireable however not required.

Special Requirements

  • The position(s) require(s) a valid California Drivers License (CDL). You must answer the questions addressing your CDL on your application. Ensure you provide your CDL number, class, expiration date, and any endorsements and/or restrictions.
  • The position(s) require(s) a Drug Screening be passed prior to being hired.
  • The position(s) require(s) a Background Investigation be cleared prior to being hired.
  • The position(s) require(s) Medical Clearance prior to being hired.

Minimum Qualifications:
Possession of a valid driver license of the appropriate class issued by the Department of Motor Vehicles, and Possession of (1) a current Department of Parks and Recreation Emergency Medical Responder certificate or equivalent; and (2) a current Department of Parks and Recreation Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)/Automated External Defibrillator (AED), American Red Cross CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer, or equivalent certificate. A current Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certificate that is approved by the Department of Emergency Medical Services Authority may be substituted for both of the required certificates. and Equivalent to six months of experience performing the duties of an open water lifeguard in other than swimming pools or water parks.

Special Requirements:
  • Minimum of two seasons as State Park Seasonal Lifeguard I.
  • Public Safety First Aid training (or higher), CPR, Beach and Code 3 driving,
  • Valid California Driver’s License and an approved DMV Driving Record.
  • Completion of the annual 1,000 yard ocean swim test, under 20 minutes.
  • Availability in spring and fall weekends, and 4 days a week in the summer.

Special Physical Characteristics:
Physical strength, endurance, and agility necessary to perform lifesaving activities; ability to swim at a level to perform lifesaving activities; mentally alert; hearing in each ear sufficient to perform the essential functions of the job; a best-corrected visual acuity of 20/20 or better in each eye; an uncorrected visual acuity of 20/40 or better in each eye; a peripheral visual field of at least 120 degrees horizontally and 100 degrees vertically in each eye; normal color vision, as determined by Ishihara or other color plate tests; pass a swimming/running performance test as determined by the Department prior to appointment and on an annual basis.
