Instructional Designer, Online Development Job Summary The Instructional Designer of the University of Utah's David Eccles School of Business Online Development will work closely with faculty and staff to update and improve online and hybrid courses. The incumbent will promote the use of technology-based resources in learning and teaching and provide consultation, instruction, and assistance to faculty, students, and staff related to the editing, design, production, quality assurance, and instructional technology of curriculum development. Responsibilities Consult with faculty and staff to design and improve courses based on learning goals, pedagogical best practices, and student needs Collaborate with faculty in outlining, organizing, and storyboarding content for online and hybrid formats Manage instructional design projects and initiatives, coordinating with cross-functional teams to ensure timely delivery Support faculty in creating clear, measurable learning objectives aligned with assessments and desired course outcomes Develop course structures, instructional strategies, and learning activities that enhance engagement, retention, and the achievement of learning objectives Apply instructional design models and learning theories to support effective course development Design and develop instructional materials using Canvas and other instructional tools Ensure content accessibility and inclusivity by applying WCAG standards and Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles Manage instructional design projects and initiatives, coordinating with cross-functional teams to ensure timely delivery Support course evaluation and continuous improvement through the use of surveys and learner feedback Deliver training on instructional design practices, course development tools, and digital pedagogy Stay current with trends in pedagogy, instructional design, and educational technologies to inform design decisions Contribute to the success of the Eccles School by demonstrating professionalism, enthusiasm, and competency in both written and face-to-face communication Note: This job description does not comprehensively list all the required duties, responsibilities, and qualifications. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Instructional Technology or related field, or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience). 2-4 years experience in instructional technology, preferably in an online education environment required. Knowledge of learning theory with the ability to apply the theory into practice; excellent technical writing and verbal communication skills; familiarity with a variety of software, such as Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Flash, Dreamweaver, Microsoft Office, and DVD Authoring tools; strong editing skills; ability to work both individually and in a team setting. Master's degree in a related field may be preferred. Applicants must demonstrate the potential ability to perform the essential functions of the job as outlined in the position description. Preferences Demonstrated experience in the field of online distance education in an academic setting. Ability to manage projects to successful deadline-oriented completion. Ability to work well in a team environment and to work effectively with a variety of academic constituencies.
